Lists of healthy swaps all look the same: Greek yogurt for sour cream, cauliflower rice for rice, an apple for crisps. They are written for nobody in particular, which is why they are easy to read and rarely used.
Fitto’s lighter versions start from the meal in front of you. Scan a burger and you get three burgers, not a salad.
Three versions, from small to different
Each set has three alternatives, ordered from the smallest change to the largest:
- Small tweak. The same dish with one or two changes, such as a smaller portion of fries, mustard instead of mayonnaise, or a single patty.
- Lighter version. The same dish rebuilt, for example a leaner mince, a different bun, or baked rather than fried.
- Different dish. Something else that satisfies the same craving, at the same time of day, in a similar cuisine.
The order is deliberate. In a supermarket study of swap suggestions, the bigger the calorie cut a swap asked for, the less likely people were to accept it (Forwood et al., 2015). A tweak you’ll actually make beats a transformation you won’t.
The limits built in
The AI proposes; the app checks. Every number on an alternative is recalculated from its ingredients rather than taken from the AI’s text, and an alternative that fails any of these is dropped, not shown:
- Never more than 50% lighter than the original. A version that halves your meal isn’t a version of it anymore.
- Never under 150 calories. A “meal” of a few bites isn’t a meal.
- Protein stays. At least 90% of the original’s protein.
- Fit Points never go down. A lighter version has to be at least as good a meal by Fitto’s whole-meal score.
- Allergies are a hard stop. If you’ve saved allergies in the coach’s profile, every alternative is checked against them.
If your goal is to gain, the direction changes. You get more nutritious versions at about the same calories, each scoring at least one Fit Point higher, rather than lighter ones.
Each card says what changed
Every alternative shows what changed from your original (“fries → side salad”), its calories and protein, its Fit Points before and after, and one line on why. In a Dutch trial of swap suggestions, people rated them only 4.5 out of 7 for credibility, and a third didn’t notice the offer at all (Dutch RCT, 2021). A bare “try this instead” asks for trust it hasn’t earned, so each card shows its working.
Tap View recipe for ingredients and steps written for that version at the same amounts, so the numbers on the card are the numbers you’ll eat. Recipes are free. Tap Use this before logging and the alternative replaces your scanned items, with an undo. Liked one? Star it and it joins your favourite meals, recipe included.
Where to find them
- On the result screen, before you log. “Try a lighter version” sits above the summary. This is the moment it is most useful, because you haven’t eaten yet.
- On Home, under any logged meal: “Lighter next time”.
- After logging, occasionally. If a meal scores low on Fit Points, Fitto may offer lighter versions for next time. Not on your first few logs, at most once a week, and it stops offering if you dismiss it twice.
- In the coach. Ask “is there a lighter way to make last night’s pasta?” More on the coach.
Nothing is generated until you tap. Lighter versions never appear on their own.
What it costs
A new set costs 1 credit, the same as a text analysis, and the price and your balance are shown before you confirm. After that:
- The same meal again within 30 days is free, because the set is saved.
- Recipes are free.
- If nothing passes the limits above, the credit is refunded.
What it deliberately doesn’t do
There is no “calories saved” counter, no XP or streak for choosing a lighter meal, and the calorie change on each card is shown in a neutral colour. The accent colour is used only for a Fit Points gain. Rewarding people for eating less is how a food log becomes something you hide from on heavy days, and the log is only useful if it includes those days. Why streaks work the same way.
