Calorie Tracker for Restaurant and Takeout Meals

To track calories for restaurant or takeout food, take a photo of the meal with Fitto AI. It identifies each food on the plate, estimates portions, and gives calories, protein, carbs and fat, without needing the dish to be in a food database. Check the portions, add anything hidden like dressing, and log it.

Why eating out breaks most calorie apps

Database apps work well for a packet of crackers. They struggle with a Thai curry from the place around the corner, a burrito bowl built at the counter, or a plate at a friend's birthday dinner. The dish usually isn't in the database. When it is, there are twenty entries with different numbers and no way to tell which one matches your plate.

So people guess, skip the meal, or give up tracking at weekends. Those are often the highest-calorie meals of the week, which is exactly when the log matters.

How Fitto handles it

  1. Photograph the plate before you eat. A shot from slightly above, with the whole plate in frame, works best.
  2. Review the list. Each food gets its own line with a portion and calories, for example rice, curry and naan as three items rather than one guess.
  3. Adjust and add. Change a portion, or add what the camera can't see, like cooking oil or a dressing on the side.
  4. Log it. Your daily total and macros update, and the day counts toward your streak.

No photo? Type or say the meal instead: "chicken shawarma wrap with garlic sauce and fries". Each photo, voice or text scan uses 1 credit.

Tips for better estimates when eating out

  • Take the photo before eating, not halfway through.
  • Get sides and drinks in the same shot, or log them separately.
  • Restaurant cooking uses more fat than home cooking. If a dish looks glossy, add a line for oil or butter.
  • Sauces and dressings served on the side are easy to miss. Add them.
  • If you share a plate, adjust the portion to what you actually ate.

Takeout you order often

Your meal history keeps every log, so a regular order is easy to recognize and compare over time. For packaged snacks and drinks, scan the barcode instead. That uses no credit.

Questions

How do I count calories when eating out?

Take a photo of the plate before you start eating. Fitto AI lists each food it sees with an estimated portion and calories, which you can adjust. If a photo is awkward, describe the meal in words instead, for example "large pepperoni pizza, two slices, and a Caesar salad".

Does it work for dishes that are not in a food database?

Yes. Fitto does not look dishes up in a database. It estimates from what is on the plate, so a local restaurant's special works the same way as a chain's menu item.

How accurate is it for restaurant food?

Restaurant meals are the hardest case for any tracker, because oil, butter and sauce are hard to see. Treat the number as an estimate, check the portions, and add a line for dressing or sauce if the photo misses it. When a chain publishes nutrition information, that is more exact.
